2020. New year, new projects.

2020. New year, new projects.

For some reason, this year feels like it should be big. Maybe its just the nice round number, twenty twenty, or maybe its that my little family has big hurdles lying ahead. Either way, I’m feeling a pull to document our time and to stay focused on what matters most. For these reasons I am planning to photograph our daily lives on film, with one roll each week. Within these parameters, I am committing to document one full day each month on one roll of film and I will be sharing that project here!

Why am I completing these projects on film? It is a medium that allows me to enjoy the art of photographing the moment and taking some creative liberties without consuming my brain more than it should. I love that I can trust that I have captured a moment worth remembering and then engage in the moment afterwards. I love the excitement when my film has been developed and I get to see the results, even when it is a week (or more) later. I love that the film stock and my exposure choices help determine the look of my photograph before I even press the shutter and that I do not have to spend hours editing my images. I love the textures and depth and nostalgia that I can feel in every single image on a roll of film. Even the not quite right photos have an element worth loving, to me. When I look at a film image, I see a warmth that just feels like it truly captured the moment. I love the fulfillment I get from personal projects and I truly need that to deliver my best work to my clients. Not only will I have carved out time to document my family life, but I will have achieved it with time to spare. And time is truly a commodity.

What I love most about film is the mindset I am in before, during, and after photographing with it. Doing something that I love and keeping some sanity feels so right. So please, follow along on this project with me. I see myself transitioning largely to this medium over the next few years.
